Coventry. City of Culture? What is there to see and do in Coventry?

So we have all seen and heard about the City Of Culture bid everywhere. Seen the posts on Twitter and Facebook, posters dotted all over the city, but what is it and what does it mean?

“UK City of Culture is a fantastic opportunity for towns and cities to celebrate their creativity and use culture as a catalyst for economic growth. I am delighted to see so many bids from across the country, showing how many areas recognise the important role culture can play in the development and regeneration of communities. UK City of Culture helps boost tourism and raises the profile of arts and culture. The exciting funding commitment from the Heritage Lottery Fund today is yet another incentive for towns to secure this prestigious title.” Matt Hancock, Minister of State for Digital and Culture.

11 cities across the UK including Hereford, Paisley, Perth, Portsmouth, St David’s and the Hundred of Dewisland, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland, Swansea, Wells, Warrington as well as Coventry. Some stiff competition with many of those cities boasting a long history of Culture. How can Coventry stand out, how can we all help Coventry win the City of Culture and secure the Heritage Lottery Fund purse of £3 Million, given to the holder of the City Of Culture 2021 to help boost local Heritage.

“Expect the unexpected! Winning City of Culture 2021 will transform your city forever. The young people that are in our schools right now will grow up in a city with more job prospects, a thriving programme of events to enjoy, more places to eat, shop and visit with a bustling city centre. It’s a lot more than a year of cultural celebration (although trust us, that year will be unforgettable!), it’s about changing the reputation of a city.”
